Under the Waxman-Markey climate bill that may be voted on today by the U.S. House, refiners would have to buy allowances for carbon dioxide spewed from their plants and from vehicles when motorists burn their fuel. Imports would need permits only for the latter, which ConocoPhillips Chief Executive Officer Jim Mulva said would create a competitive imbalance.
“It will lead to the opportunity for foreign sources to bring in transportation fuels at a lower cost, which will have an adverse impact to our industry, potential shutdown of refineries and investment and, ultimately, employment,” Mulva said in a June 16 interview in Detroit. Houston-based ConocoPhillips has the second-largest U.S. refining capacity.
The same amount of gasoline that would have $1 in carbon costs imposed if it were domestic would have 10 cents less added if it were imported, according to energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie in Houston. Contrary to President Barack Obama’s goal of reducing dependence on overseas energy suppliers, the bill would incent U.S. refiners to import more fuel, said Clayton Mahaffey, an analyst at RedChip Cos. in Maitland, Florida.
“They’ll be searching the globe for refined products that don’t carry the same level of carbon costs,” said Mahaffey, a former Exxon Corp. refinery manager.

IRAN
Links all over the Internet have been popping up about the Iranian violence and with good reason. Right now there are innocent people are being beaten to death in the streets of Tehran.
Charles Krauthammer has an excellent article in the Washington Times titled "Hope and Change - but Not for Iran." This is the excerpt that I think sums up most of what is happening with Iran right now.
"This revolution will end either as a Tiananmen (a hot Tiananmen with massive and bloody repression or a cold Tiananmen with a finer mix of brutality and co-optation) or as a true revolution that brings down the Islamic Republic.
The latter is improbable but, for the first time in 30 years, not impossible. Imagine the repercussions. It would mark a decisive blow to Islamist radicalism, of which Iran today is not just standard-bearer and model, but financier and arms supplier. It would do to Islamism what the collapse of the Soviet Union did to communism -- leave it forever spent and discredited.
In the region, it would launch a second Arab spring. The first in 2005 -- the expulsion of Syria from Lebanon, the first elections in Iraq and early liberalization in the Gulf states and Egypt -- was aborted by a fierce counterattack from the forces of repression and reaction, led and funded by Iran.

In Omaha they now want to pass a bill that would require finger printing for sales of guns to large retailers, that aren't pawn shops. So if I wanted to go trade my Springfield XD to get another gun at Scheels, the city ordinance would require that I get fingerprinted and that the record of that transaction remains on file, indefinitely, to be reviewed without warrant. Well, if it starts there, what would stop them from imposing laws that would require all transactions of firearms be finger printed? Time to fight!

This afternoon, the Omaha City Council will consider an ordinance that would require individuals wishing to sell firearms to "secondhand stores," such as Scheels, Guns Unlimited, and other places (which are not pawnbrokers), be fingerprinted before the transaction can occur. The ordinance would also require store owners to keep these fingerprints on record and authorizes law enforcement to inspect those records without notice or warrant.
If passed, this could lead to future ordinances requiring fingerprinting for all firearm transactions.
The meeting will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Legislative Chambers of the Omaha City Council located at 1819 Farnam St. in Omaha.

What would be a more awesome commercial than having Dean Cain be a spokesman?... well anything, but you can count on Microsoft to pull him out of the Ripley's show and have him strap on a cape again to promote Internet Explorer 8. Enjoy!
So, again, Microsoft portrays their IE8 as the better browser. No shock there. Granted IE8 is a better browser than the previous versions, many of the claims are not accurate. You can check out this comparison chart on Microsoft's Website but I thought it would be nice to see it here.

"This video was made in the Antwerp, Belgium Central (Train) Station on March 23, 2009, with no warning to the passengers passing through the station. At 8:00 am a recording of Julie Andrews singing 'Do, Re, Mi' begins to play on the public address system. As the bemused passengers watch in amazement, some 200 dancers begin to appear from the crowd and station entrances. They created this amazing stunt with just two rehearsals!"

Ladies and Gentleman, I am in love. This 45th anniversary edition of the Mustang is just a great looking car! It has such clean lines and aggressive posture. Some of the angels on this car look so much more like the old classics with the fastback.
The car comes standard with the Ford 4.6-liter V-8 rated 320 hp, or optional with a supercharged V-8 rated 400 hp. Sadly, I will not be getting one. I'm sure because of price, but also the fact there are only 45 being made.

H.R. 197, introduced in the U.S. House by Representatives Cliff Stearns’ (R-Fla.) and Rick Boucher (D-Va.), would allow any person with a valid concealed firearm carrying permit or license, issued by a state, to carry a concealed firearm in any state, as follows: In states that issue concealed firearm permits, a state’s laws governing where concealed firearms may be carried would apply within its borders. In states that do not issue carry permits, a federal "bright-line" standard would permit carrying in places other than police stations; courthouses; public polling places; meetings of state, county, or municipal governing bodies; schools; passenger areas of airports; and certain other locations. The bill applies to D.C., Puerto Rico and U.S. territories. It would not create a federal licensing system; it would require the states to recognize each others’ carry permits, just as they recognize drivers’ licenses and carry permits held by armored car guards. Rep. Stearns has introduced such legislation since 1995.
• Today, 48 states have laws permitting concealed carry, in some circumstances. Forty states, accounting for two-thirds of the U.S. population, have RTC laws. Thirty-six have "shall issue" permit laws (including Alaska, which also allows carrying without a permit), three have fairly administered "discretionary issue" permit laws, and Vermont (and Alaska) allow carrying without a permit. (Eight states have restrictive discretionary issue laws.) Most RTC states have adopted their laws in the last decade.
• Citizens with carry permits are more law-abiding than the general public. Only 0.01% of nearly 1.2 million permits issued by Florida have been revoked because of firearm crimes by permit holders. Similarly low percentages of permits have been revoked in Texas, Virginia, and other RTC states that keep such statistics. RTC is widely supported by law enforcement officials and groups.
• States with RTC laws have lower violent crime rates. On average, 22% lower total violent crime, 30% lower murder, 46% lower robbery, and 12% lower aggravated assault, compared to the rest of the country. The seven states with the lowest violent crime rates are RTC states. (Data: FBI.)

Back
Okay so I was gone for a while on a Trip for work. Got to see all of Tampa, Clearwater and St. Petersburg in Florida. Very nice area, and a lot to do and see. But I am really glad to finally be back home. Never thought I would like to see Nebraska so much but I think it was more because the family stayed back this time.

iPhone 3GS
Okay, so I would still like to get an iPhone someday. I just really have no desire to switch over to AT&T for the service. The big news in Apple's world, is the addition of the iPhone 3GS to its line up. There are some features of this phone that make it far superior to its "older" generation. Jaguar XFR
I give you the 1 3/4 Ton Jaguar XFR. This thing is a spaceship or made from alien technology. What a heck of a car!

Jaguar has gone outside the box with nearly every aspect of the XF. Its look is fresh and bold. The interior design and technology are anything but retro. Unlike its competitors from Germany, there's no six-cylinder "base" model sold in the U.S. Perhaps trying to focus more beginner buyers toward the updated-for-2008 {{{X-Type}}}, you'll find no fewer than eight cylinders beneath an XF bonnet.
Buy-in begins with the aforementioned 4.2-liter, 300-horsepower V-8. The XF Supercharged ups the ante to the same blown, 4.2-liter, 420-horsepower V-8 currently huffing away in the performance-minded XKR coupe/convertible and XJR sedan. But BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz offer their midsize sport/lux four-doors with 450 to 500 horses. So that's where Jag is headed with the XFR.
Our intel suggests the XFR V-8 will share certain architecture with the current AJV8 engine, but employ, at minimum, a new block able to be sized at 5.0 liters and beyond. Atop that will be supercharging and intercooling. The result should be at least 500 horsepower in blown form, with a 400-or-so-horse, naturally aspirated version to come later, perhaps replacing the current supercharged 4.2. The XFR's transmission will remain the excellent ZF six-speed automatic, with paddle shifters as on the XKR, plus its own unique calibration.
Standard on the XFR will be 20-inch light-alloy wheels and speed-rated rubber, along with the usual cocktail of upgraded brakes, stiffer suspension tuning, a beefier exhaust note, and sportier interior trim. Visuals likely will ape other Jaguar "R" models, meaning a bit less chrome, wire-mesh front grillework, more aggressive front and rear fascias, a rear lip spoiler, and a slightly reduced ride height.
The XFR will show its production face sometime in 2008 as a 2009 model. Pricing has yet to be announced, but it'll be aggressively positioned against the M5 and E63, meaning a predicted base of just under $80,000.

Google Street View
I think Google finally got the street view right. This has been a great tool that I have used for places before I travel there or just to see what an area looks like, without ever leaving my chair. ...I know lazy right? Planning trips is 100X easier now by using this to get a feel for the area. Gone are the days of looking at a map and getting travel guides. Welcome to the 21st Century!
Pole Position to Forza 3!
So I was a huge fan of Pole Position on the old Atari. I love the description in Wikipedia "Pole Position was the leading game in arcades worldwide due to its relatively realistic graphics for the time." I even had the little controller with the dial on it, you know the one that really made you feel like you where driving a car... okay, maybe not so much. But anyway I wanted to give a comparison of that Atari game and what the race car games are like now. Not only that but you get the privilege of sitting through a 1980's commercial, which we all know those are cool.
And the next game I will get, somehow someway, is Forza 3. Much improved in 30 years wouldn't you say?

D-Day

June 6th, 1944 65 years ago today, so many of our own troops along with our allies gave the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom. Normandy still holds many of the troops that did not return.
I'll be flying my flag today in memory of this day and what it stands for. Hopefully my neighbors will join me.

Dennis Miller had a hilarious MillerTime segment with O'Reilly. I normally don't watch it but he has a brother who is the manager for Sasha Baron Cohen, so O'Reilly asks him about the stunt at the MTV Video Awards.

Like in "Who's Line is it Anyway," for 1000 Points, who can tell me what is wrong with this picture? Anyone, Anyone at all?

XBox
Controller-less gaming. Makes sense that this was the way it was all going, but on the 360? I can only imagine how Project Natal is really going to work. 
Now it is something cool to be sure, and if it works like the preview then I'm all for it. But, has anyone actually sat down and gone through the speech recognition program in windows... BRUTAL!! I sure hope you don't have to train this thing as intensely, but I can only imagine. And will it work with older games? Well once they fix the red ring of death I'm pretty sure that I would get one of these.

PSP GO
So I have made references for a while about a successor to the PSP and it looks like it will make its debut tomorrow. But after all of the hype I don't know how this PSP Go is going to stack up to the original PSP. The new one has some cool tech and I'm all for that, but it seems like this is geared to a more subtle gamer. I would have at least liked to have seen two joysticks... Well I feel let down but I guess I will just have to wait to see one for myself.

Okay so the new trailer is out for G.I. Joe. Personally I think I was more hyped by the first trailer. This new one out looks like the joes are wearing the RoboCop suit, so I really don't know what to think about it now. Just something else to wait for an accurate opinion.

Future Weapons
The XM25 Advanced Airburst Weapon System is starting to see its first field trials. This is an entire new class of weapon in the sense that it can hit a target around a corner, in caves or trenches, even if they're out of the soldier's line of sight.
It takes the concept of a grenade launcher and adds some technology to it. The design allows for a soldier to program the 25mm round with a laser range finder, to detonate at a precise point in the air. No impact is needed with this weapon and that is what gives the XM25 its lethality.
"For example, in Iraq we had many instances where there was a sniper firing from a rooftop and you have a squad trying to engage that target, but the soldiers couldn't get to him with the weapons they had, so they'd call in the Air Force to drop a JDAM (joint direct attack munition)," said Audette. "We can take out the target at $25 per XM round as opposed to a $20,000 to $50,000 JDAM."
With a range of 750 meters — nearly half a mile — the XM-25 would also be very effective in Afghanistan, where Taliban fighters often hide behind rocks and in caves.
In addition to precision-timed grenades, the gun is also built to fire armor-piercing, door-breaching, anti-personnel and less-than-lethal rounds.
I'm still thinking that a side arm would be necessary with this weapon.

The Community
Joel McHale is a pretty funny guy. I usually watch catching The Soup from time to time and would probably go see his stand up if he were going anywhere near me. This new pilot that he has on NBC that looks like it might be good. Don't know if it will last, it looks like the first episode should be funny with Chevy Chase in it.

So I know I have neglected this blog for a little while. Weather has gotten nice here and I have been spending time with my 6 month old. That and mowing my jungle I call a yard.
So I have been a little preoccupied with some other projects. There will still be posts but they may not happen every day, but I will try and keep it going at least every other day until things calm down a little.

What it boils down to is breaking the speed barrier of light. So far nothing we have does this. According to the article: "this speed limit only applies within space-time (the continuum of three dimensions of space plus one of time that we live in). While any given object can't travel faster than light speed within space-time, theory holds, perhaps space-time itself could travel."
So now that the physicist has spoken, here it is in simpler terms.

This week GM pulled the plug on a legendary line of cars. Now, I'm not a GM person per se, but They had some iconic cars from the Pontiac Line. Some of the more memorable ones in my mind are the 1988 Pontiac Firebird KITT from Night Rider, the 1974 Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit and the Pontiac GTO from the 60's. Maybe someday they will be back, but for now so long Pontiac.
The Pontiac brand is part of the General Motors family, and is home to many of the automaker's more performance-oriented vehicles. Currently, the marque offers a broad range of sporty cars and SUVs. However, as part of GM's restructuring plan, the brand is slated to be discontinued by the end of the 2010 model year.
Pontiac originated as the Oakland Car Company of Pontiac, Michigan, in 1907; it was founded by Edward Murphy. Acquired by General Motors in 1909, Oakland introduced the first Pontiac vehicle in 1926. Dubbed the "Chief of the Sixes," the car was powered by a six-cylinder engine and made its debut at that year's New York auto show. It was so successful that the Oakland name was phased out in favor of Pontiac, the name of an 18th-century chief of the Ottawa Indians. Throughout the 1930s and '40s Pontiac made coupes, sedans and wagons in the low-to-mid price ranges. A unique styling cue of Pontiac cars from the mid-'30s to the mid-'50s was known as "Silver Streak," a set of art-deco-inspired chrome "speed lines" that ran up over the length of the hood to the base of the windshield.The 1950s saw the introduction of the Pontiac Bonneville. In hopes of recapturing past glory, the division embarked on a plan to retire aged models and introduce all-new ones with distinctive styling and personality. For a while, the effort seemed to be bearing fruit. New models like the Vibe, Solstice and G8 made Pontiac a brand to consider in many segments. The Torture Memos
So the release of the "torture" memos has been quite a stir. More specifically the use of waterboarding. But what the hell, this is going to be a long one because I cover some of them, most of them. The Liberal Huffington Post has them posted but mine are abbreviated.
Here is how it goes, before undergoing any of these enhanced techniques, a detainee is "evaluated by a medical and psychological professional ... to ensure that they are not likely to suffer any sever physical or mental pain or suffering as a result of interrogation."
Also "Medical and psychological personnel are on-scene throughout and daily physical and psychological evaluations are continued throughout the period of use."
Another fact "These techniques have all been imported from military, Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape ("SERE") training, where they have been used for years on U.S. military personnel, although with some significant differences described below."
Well lets take a look shall we.
Oh this is harsh, Number 1 Dietary manipulation: "This technique involves the substitute of commercial liquid meal replacements for normal food, presenting detainees with a bland, unappetizing, but nutritionally complete diet."

Number 2 Nudity: "This technique is used to cause psychological discomfort, particularly if a detainee, for cultural or other reasons is especially modest."

Number 3 Attention Grasp: "consists of grasping the individual with both hands, one hand on each side of the collar opening, in a controlled quick motion. In the same motion as the grasp, the individual is drawn toward the interrogator."
Oh no, not the dreaded "grasp." We are just shy of a feather being involved here.
Number 4 Walling."This technique involves the use of a flexible, false wall. The individual is placed with his heels touching the flexible wall. The interrogator pulls the individual forward and then quickly and firmly pushes the individual into the wall. It is the individuals shoulder blades that hit the wall. During this motion, the head and neck are supported with a rolled hood or towel that provides a C-collar effect to help prevent whiplash. To reduce further the risk of injury, the individual is allowed to rebound from the flexible wall."
Wow, I think that I paid to enter Six Flags once where they shoved me in a car, threw a plastic restraint around my neck, then shot me out of a dark tunnel into a 2 minute terror ride that I may never have recovered from, this was repeated at least 5 TIMES!!

Then the dreaded WATERBOARD "detainee is lying on a gurney that is inclined at an angle of 10 - 15 degrees to the horizontal, with the detainee on his back and his head toward the lower end of the gurney. A cloth is placed over the detainee's face, and cold water is poured on the cloth from a height of approximately 6 to 18 inches. How in the world are those Arab countries not laughing there asses off at our "torture" techniques. Have you seen what they do to their own people when they steal? Yeah, they chop off a hand. You think their torture techniques are lighter than ours?
I'm sorry but this was a huge mistake releasing this simply from the fact that now all the other countries know how "intense" we really are.
Reminds me of the Spanish Inquisition:

Number 4 Walling."This technique involves the use of a flexible, false wall. The individual is placed with his heels touching the flexible wall. The interrogator pulls the individual forward and then quickly and firmly pushes the individual into the wall. It is the individuals shoulder blades that hit the wall. During this motion, the head and neck are supported with a rolled hood or towel that provides a C-collar effect to help prevent whiplash. To reduce further the risk of injury, the individual is allowed to rebound from the flexible wall."
Wow, I think that I paid to enter Six Flags once where they shoved me in a car, threw a plastic restraint around my neck, then shot me out of a dark tunnel into a 2 minute terror ride that I may never have recovered from, this was repeated at least 5 TIMES!!
